Schaeffler Australia and its Bearing Engineering Service division (BES) will be exhibiting at AusRAIL 2017, stand 429, three key elements of the rail technology suite applicable to passenger, freight, transport, mining and other resources and bulk handling industries that depend on rail. The technologies include the FAG high capacity TAROL (class K) tapered roller bearing, bearing reconditioning services and hybrid and insulated bearings. Benefits of a complete system, featuring Schaeffler’s advanced technologies, reconditioning expertise and predictive maintenance programmes, include:

High Capacity TAROL Tapered Roller Bearings

Schaeffler’s new high-capacity TAROL Class K tapered roller bearings are ideally suited to freight and heavy rail applications and are currently undergoing a major field trial in Australia.

The proprietary Mancrodur steel used in the High Capacity TAROL bearings radically improves performance in existing and new build applications. It provides up to 30% increased load rating compared to standard Class K bearings, and double the service life in like for like applications.

To help rail operators immediately achieve significant gains in the operating life of their fleets and to substantially lower their total cost of ownership (TCO), existing AAR Class K journals can easily be replaced with Schaeffler's new TAROL Class K package bearing units.

Bearing Reconditioning Services

Schaeffler has a dedicated centre for reconditioning, Bearing Engineering Services (BES), a fully-fledged local engineering and maintenance operation with extensive local knowledge, backed by global technology, expertise and support.

BES, which recently celebrated 25 years since its establishment as a dedicated Australian operation, offers local assessment and repair of both railway and industrial bearings used in a wide range of applications, typically resulting in significant reductions in maintenance costs.

Specialised services performed by BES cover bearing reconditioning and repair (including raceway and rolling element repair or replacement) along with custom bearing repackaging protection and crating for long term storage.

Hybrid and Insulated Bearings

The passage of current in traction motors can cause serious damage to the raceways of bearing rings in the form of fluting which can lead to downtime, reduced service life and extremely high repair costs in all rail applications.

Schaeffler offers a range of innovative solutions help prevent and eliminate this, including hybrid bearings with ceramic rolling elements and insulated bearings featuring inner and outer rings with a ceramic coating. Hybrid and insulated bearings result in a low rolling element mass, lower centrifugal forces and lower friction, reduced heat generation and improved lubricant life

“Both innovations help to prevent or eliminate current passage. Hybrid bearings also provide reduced friction and wear. Hybrid bearings incorporating ceramic rolling elements offer extreme protection against the passage of current. Alternatively, bearings with a ceramic coating on the inner or outer ring offer a cost-effective solution for helping to prevent damage commonly encountered over Australian rail networks extending from light rail and passenger through to heavy rail used extensively in the mining and logistics industries,” says Mr Cavalli.
