The passage of current in traction motors can cause serious damage to the raceways of bearing rings in the form of fluting which can lead to downtime, reduced service life and extremely high repair costs in both heavy and light rail applications.
Precision bearing manufacturer Schaeffler offers a range of innovative solutions to prevent this, including FAG X-life bearings featuring inner and outer rings with ceramic coating, as well as FAG X-life hybrid bearings with ceramic rolling elements. This results in a low rolling element mass, lower centrifugal forces and less friction, less heat and reduced breakdown of lubricants.

X-life is the seal of quality for ultra-high performance products of INA and FAG global brands. They are characterised by higher basic dynamic load ratings compared to conventional products, resulting in a longer rating life and operating life, says Mr Enzo Cavalli, Manager – Railway & Reconditioning, Schaeffler Australia Pty Ltd.

“Both innovations help to prevent current passage. Hybrid bearings also provide reduced friction and wear. Hybrid bearings incorporating ceramic rolling elements offer extreme protection against the passage of current. Alternatively, bearings with a ceramic coating on the inner or outer ring offer a cost-effective solution for helping to prevent damage commonly encountered over Australian rail networks extending from light rail and passenger through to heavy rail used extensively throughout the mining and logistics industry,” says Mr Cavalli.
Maximum protection and safety from Hybrid bearings
FAG hybrid bearings reliably prevent the passage of current and offer maximum operational reliability. The rings of these hybrid bearings are made from rolling bearing steel, while the rolling elements are manufactured from ceramic material that is resistant to wear and functions as a current insulator, says Mr Cavalli.
Due to their improved operating characteristics, FAG Hybrid bearings offer a longer grease operating life than standard bearings. Furthermore, hybrid designs can be more cost-effective for smaller bearing sizes than ceramic-coated bearings. Advantages compared to standard bearings:
• Hybrid bearings (both roller and ball bearings) provide maximum resistance against the passage of electric current
• Hybrid bearings have lower friction levels and therefore make lower operating temperatures possible and allow higher limiting speeds
• Hybrid bearings have better emergency running characteristics than standard bearings
